Since 2004, the London Feminist Network has organised an annual, national women’s Reclaim the Night march against rape and all forms of male violence against women.
Congratulations women! Despite the rain, storms and floods, again around 2000 marchers bravely Reclaimed The Night against rape and male violence on Saturday 21st November 2009. We marched from Whitehall through the closed streets of central London led by 50 women drummers all the way from Glasgow — Sheboom!
A packed rally followed at the Camden Centre, Kings Cross, to hear speakers, enjoy hot Caribbean food, home made cakes and a licensed bar while visiting stalls from a variety of organisations working for women and against violence. The rally was followed by the Emma Humphreys Memorial Prize, an annual award to one woman and one group for their work against violence against women and children. Hundreds of women celebrated news of this year’s winners — Feminist campaigner from West Yorkshire Justice for Women Sandra McNeill won the individual award and Object won the group award. This was great news following Object’s tireless work leading to the historic win on Clause 13 in the Policing & Crime Bill, which at last will turn the eyes of the law on those who fuel the demand for prostitution by criminalising punters. The rally cheered and laughed as Anna from Object made her winning speech by simply chanting “we changed the law, we changed the law, we changed the law and we’ll change some more”!
After the rally and EHMP awards, the DJ Pam Savage kicked off our annual RTN party and women and men partied as only Feminists and Pro-Feminists can well into the night.
We hope to see you all back in central London to support the annual Million Women Rise women’s march to mark International Women’s Day 2010. Million Women Rise is on Saturday 6th March 2010 and the London Feminist Network will be there, look out for our giant purple banner.
But you don’t have to wait until then to get involved! If you live in London then you can join us in a variety of activism throughout the year by joining the London Feminist Network. We hold a monthly meeting followed by a social, a friendly monthly Feminist Book Group as well as an annual conference called Feminism In London and regular fundraisers, Feminist film festivals, educational Feminars and much more.
There is plenty of Feministing going on outside London too! You can find out about Sister Feminist Networks all around the UK on our website and we list all sister Reclaim The Night marches here on this website. If you don’t have a local Feminist group, why not start your own! We are happy to provide advice and support and put you in touch with any local contacts we have. You can email us at londonfeminist@yahoo.co.uk
Our leaflet for this year's march is now available to download as a PDF (99kb).
